Owning your own small business is not about worshipping the almighty dollar. It's about being self-sufficient: taking charge of your destiny, earning a living, and providing a living for others.I can't count the times that I've been asked why I own my own hospice. I've also seen the looks that come with someone finding out that I own my own hospice. I basically get a look that says, "Your room in hell may be warmer than most."
For me the decision to own a hospice was driven by the decision to never work for someone who didn't have the same standards that I have. My standards cost me money, and I'm fine with that. What bothers me is the assumption from most that I'm in this for the money. I know it's an easy stereotype to make, but some people don't fit the mold. I'm no saint, but I do believe that I'm in the business for the right reason.
(Now I only wish I could figure out how to market that fact without saying something like, "use my hospice, because most of the others are pieces of *$&$!)
