I wrote a whole rant about the Terri Schiavo situation, but have deleted almost the whole thing. I've stayed out of it, and chose to remain somewhat out of it. With the exception of the following paragraph which I salvaged from the rant.
We've debated the case around the office for who knows how long, and I don't want to enter that debate here. (My opinion on the specific case of Terri Schiavo is this: I don't know. I don't know who is right. I don't know what conversations where had with whom and what was or was not said. I sure don't have a clue what Terri would have wanted, and find it amusing how people who have never met her can know for sure what she would have wanted.) All I know is that this is the reason I'm such a fan of everyone having a living will. Do the paperwork folks. If you are a Five Wishes state (click here to find out if you are), then use it. If not, use the form the state gives you and tell your state congressperson that your state should become a Five Wishes state. It takes all of five minutes to fill out a living will (five wishes takes a bit longer because it covers so much ground), another five to get it witnessed, and another five to tell your family that it exists and make copies. Fifteen minutes of forethought would save you and your family from ending up where the Schiavo family is today. I know we all think that it can't/won't happen to us, but why take the risk?
