I've had this post by Risible Girl in my pocket for a while as she worked out some tech issues. She is a hospice volunteer and this post talks a bit about her experience in that role, what she is getting to do, and why she does it.
I can't tell you enough how valuable people like this are. If you like people and are the type of person that strangers open up to, then you should seriously consider becoming a hospice volunteer. I promise you'll be rewarded for your time by meeting some of the most interesting people you've ever imagined.
Thanks Risible and all the volunteers who give of their time to help people with a terminal illness and their families!

I love the stories I hear from patients. It truly is an honor and a pleasure to work with people at the end of life - they seem to share so much more than other patients. One of my favorites was this adorable little old lady who told me about growing up as a child trapese artist in a family of trapese artists and how they married her off to a much older man when she was still a teen. She had quite a wild life. And she remained so full of energy and an enjoyment of life right up until the end.
I just read this post. I am about the biggest advocate for Hospice of anyone that I know. I'm currently also working with corporate groups to recruit new volunteers and raise money. My Hospice coordinator has started calling me the "Hospice Sugar Mama". tee hee.
Such important work, and I love every minute of it. In the last week, I've decided that after I retire in 9 years, I'd like to become a grief and bereavement counselor. I'm going to check into schooling tomorrow.
This is SUCH important work, and I get so much out of it.
Terrific blog. I search the internet everytime I
get a moment to find blogs. Its better than cold iced
tea and I have to visit it one more time!
